CHRIS BEARD

They call him the “Prince of Blues,” and Chris Beard is at his best exactly where blues belongs, live and right in front of you.

Beard didn’t learn the blues from a distance. He grew up in it. His father, blues guitarist Joe Beard, came up around Beale Street, and Chris was exposed to some of the great players from an early age. Family friends including Buddy Guy and Matt “Guitar” Murphy helped shape the guitarist and performer he would become.

After years of playing clubs in and around Rochester, New York, Beard released his debut album, Barwalkin’, in 1998. The record earned him a W.C. Handy Award nomination for Best New Blues Artist. His follow-up, Born to Play the Blues, helped establish the sound and reputation that earned him the name “Prince of Blues.”

Through the years, Beard has continued to build his own style around powerful vocals, deeply personal songwriting and electric guitar playing that carries the influence of traditional blues without simply repeating it.

His latest album, Pass It On Down, continues that story and the family connection to the music that has followed him his entire life.

This is emotional, guitar-driven, no-hiding-place blues from a player who leaves something on the stage every night.
